I'm from a small town, always lived in a small town (aprox 4,000 people). What is it like to live in NYC. I find it amazing. I've never even been close to New York. But is it that huge??? Do you know your way around the WHOLE town? I understand it's made up of different areas...like bronx, long island? Do you ever get lost or do you know the whole way around?? Is there always sirens? I could ask so many other questions lol. Did you see the twin towers burning? Had you ever been in the twin towers before they burned down? Is it that dangerous in New York City? lol ok i could go on & on. I'd love to ask more questions. :)

  1. I don't know what some of these people are talking about.  When you say NYC, do you mean Manhattan?? If you mean Manhattan then it's very conjested but very exciting...and yes, you can still barbque, depends on if you live in a building that has a terrace or not.  Manhattan can be noisy but if you live on the 20th floor of a really big building, you probably wouldn't hear the sirens.  You can definately, definately get lost in the city, but it is easier than you think to find your location back.  If you go to one of the other boroughs, there are parts of the other boroughs that have a more country like feel to them and you can definately barbque if you want to.  No matter where you go in NYC, it is excited and interesting and it is known as the city that never sleeps for a reason......it never shuts down. Welcome and best of luck.

  2. New York actually sucks.  There are soooo many cooler cities in America:  Portland , OR, Austin,TX, New Orleans, Boston, San Fran...the list goes on.

New York is expensive for no reason, the people are full of themselves, and it's definitely fallen off the map in terms of being one of the cooler cities.  Most good bands come from other cities nowadays.  Fashion is dictated by other places too.  It's just a big, stinky, has been city.

  3. it's New Yorkers, not New York City ers! come on, you living under a rock?

  4. wow... umm.. it mihgt seem  big but i feel like itss not realli..i live in queens and i go to the city, l.i., bronx, and brooklyn mostly by car sometimes i take the train. i love ny becus theres always something goin on ....its the city that truly never sleeps!!!

  5. get a load a jennifer k

the poster child for nasty new yorker

  6. Heyy ur funnyy... im from NYC  (brooklyn)  and Noo u can't get lost in Ny, even tho its big as in population.  The city is tiny!!  Always sirens, yes it could be dangerous depending where u are & when...and even different hoods r like scary.  Living here is amazing no other in the city in the world can compare.  The ppl suck sometimes.  Its old, its dirty...but u get used to it.

I love it cuz u don't need a car, but then...its nice when u have one.  Umm the twin towers were amazinggggg I went when I was 11 or 12 and never went back =(

I say everyone should live in NY for a little bit, even if its for 6mths or at least visit.

  7. from the Bronx to long island you prob could fit 20 of your towns and them some long island to the Bronx is an hour drive depending on which part of the island your on...driving from one end of the island (east to west) will take you 2 hrs so the city is very big you need to visit to see for yourself. (get a rental car and a gps) crime isnt that bad as long as you stay out of certain areas like most other major cities but you def should go sit it

  8. I too came from a small town to the Big Apple.  I have been in the city for 6 years! At first I didn't venture far bc its very intimidating!  But there is so much to explore on the tiny island (only 13 miles from tip to tip and 2 miles across at the widest part.)

There are so many little neighborhoods like, Little Italy, Chinatown, Wall Street, Soho, Theatre District, and Battery Park (where I reside - I think its the most beautiful part.)

Although I have been in the city for 6 years I do know my way around pretty much, but you can get lost sometimes, for example coming out of a different subway exit and then you have to remember which direction to walk! But you get the hang of it!

  9. haha, I just recently visited New York City, right now im 13.

N.Y.C is a Big city squished together. actually i find it easy to get around. its amazing. And yes. The Bronx, Queens, brooklyn, and manhattan all make up new york city.

and new york city is now one of the safeest cities in america. it sounds crazy but its true, there are cops litterally on every corner and helicopters flying around constintally and yes..ITS LOUD!

but i loved every secongd of it. transportation is pretty easy, limos, taxi's, subways, trains.etc. What i found most interesting is that there are  abiout 2-3 McDonalds and Starbucks on every street haha =) OMG and the hot dog stands are AMAZING, i loved the hot dogs, if you ever got hungry and only had 2 dolars on you, lok around and im sure youll find a hotgod stand =) Then in china town, be carful when you find that disigner purse you really wanted for only $30. Its a  knockoff, and so are the perfumes, they may look just like the real thing but TRUST me....they can be filled with water (i found out the hard way)

  10. I live in Brooklyn. its pretty loud in NYC. lots of sirens and honking.

theres tons of taxis around, so you dont really need a car... and the city is pretty small, but a lot of shops are crammed together. you can go to a lot of shopping just by walking a block! i've never gotten lost here. its pretty easy to get around. but a lot of people walk so you might be swept along with them.

i think you'll be amazed by all the sky scrapers here...and the huge houses for the millionaires

the people here are ok...some are pretty rude, but alot of them are polite. NYC is dangerous only if you go into mysterious alleys at night. the streets are kind of dirty with cigarette butts and trash, but you get used to it.

i didnt see the twin towers burn, but ive been there before. it was pretty cool

  11. I too am from a small town, I have lived in NYC for 10 years, currently on Park Ave in the 30's. It is very cool, but you don't get to drive around or barbecue or have a lot of space, even rich people don't have as much space as I did growing up in the woods. Yes, NYC is made up of 5 boroughs, Manhattan (the main one with the Empire State, Times Square and all of the TV shows), Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx and Staten Island. I have live in Bklyn, Queens, and Manhattan, love em all in different ways, some neighborhoods more than others. I don't get lost, but then if you can look at a map there is no reason to ever be too lost, but no, I don't know my way around every neighborhood. In the outer boroughs (everywhere not Manhattan) for example, I have to get my bearings, in Manhattan I pretty much know where I'm going, except when I get way downtown, it's confusing because the streets stop using the grid system. It's not that big of a deal, you just have to use a map. There are sirens from time to time, but I don't notice an incredible amount of them. I did see the twin towers burning, that whole thing sucked. It is safer that the small southern city I went to college in, like any place, you are safe if you stay out of bad areas, I have no problems, Manhattan is very safe, there are only certain small sections that are a little shady but they are becoming better, and more expensive, every year. Come visit!!!! U will love NY.

  12. NYC is very busy, crowded and not too clean but I love every mile of it!  It's full of tall buildings and people of every type.  From the rich to the poor to freaks to soccer moms.  There is nothing normal about it.  I know my way around because I was born and raised here.  It's not dangerous in most parts of NY.. depends on where you go and what time.  The more crowded it is, the more safe it tends to be.  There are a lot of sirens that go around here and there.  What I love most about the city is that it really never sleeps.  You never get bored and theres always something interesting open 24 hours.  We have every type of cuisine.  I love riding on the subways and seeing a bunch of kids breakdance on the train.  The other day I came down for my lunch break and saw big red carpets on the street only to find out the All Star Parade was going on!  Here I am, on a regular day taking lunch and I saw Derek Jeter and A-Rod!  I LOVE NYC!

  13. I grew up in a small town and moved to New York three years ago. I live in Brooklyn and work in the city ("the city" being Manhattan to those of us who live here). Manhattan itself is tiny, and it's very easy to get to know your way around, because it's so small and most of it is set up like a grid. The other boroughs are bigger, and since they're largely residential, most people only know certain parts of them (the more commercial areas) really well, unless they've lived there for a long time.

You sort of get immune to the sound of sirens. I don't notice them anymore when I'm in the city. Then again, in my quiet neighborhood in Brooklyn, you hardly every hear them.

The main reason I'm responding, though, is to say this: appreciate the perks of living in a small town - having quiet, and a yard, and lots of space, and friendly neighbors. I like living here, but it's a trade-off, like anything else. There's always something to do, lots of great restaurants, museums, parks, everything you could imagine doing and plenty of things you've probably never thought of. And for certain careers, there's no better place to be. But on the other hand, it's cramped, and most people are really rude (and many of them don't even seem aware of it). Also, if you don't have a lot of money, you can't afford to enjoy a lot of the things that people love about NYC: the famous restaurants, trendy nightclubs, designer shops, etc. And the rent is absolutely ridiculous.

Don't get the wrong impression - I do like living here, for now. I'm just saying, appreciate what you have. The grass is always greener somewhere else. And there's hardly any grass here.

  14. It's quite amazing. I live in the burough of Queens. There are five buroughs. Manhattan ( which is refered to as "the City") it has all the skyscrapers and most of the famous landmarks you see on TV and the movies. theres the Bronx, Staten Island, Brookyln and Queens. Brooklyn and Queens are geographically on the western end of Long Island, but politically part of NYC. You would probably like Staten Island. All areas have there crime and or good parts. I saw the towers burn and had to walk from Manhattan to Queens over the Queens burough bridge. Had to do the same thing when the northeast power outage happened.
