New York Giants DE Osi Umenyiora focusing on game – NFL News
Throughout the offseason, New York Giants defensive end made the headlines for not very good reasons as he was unable to get a desired contract extension and was reportedly in conflict with the team management as well.
However once his contract issue was resolved, the defensive end showed up for organised team activities (OTAs) and is now present at training camp.
Even after Osi got the contract, it was reported that the player was not very happy with its payout. Nevertheless, Osi is now not bothered by the contract situation and focusing completely on his game.
According to the details present on the team’s website, he said:
“I’ve never been one to focus on a contract situation when I’m actually out there on the football field. I played for pride and I play for my teammates and for this coaching staff, and I think that is going to be the exact same.”
Meanwhile, Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell has also appreciated the level of professionalism shown by Osi and said that the team never had problems regarding the player’s focus on the game.
The defensive coordinator said:
“Osi has always been focused when he’s out on the field and even in the meeting room. We’ve never, since I’ve been here, had a problem with his focus on football. He’s a professional, and all of the distractions outside of the football arena he was able
to handle. Osi’s been great for me.”
Earlier, Osi’s participation in OTAs was also well received and appreciated by his teammates and coaches. After getting the contract matter resolved when Osi reported at OTAs, Giants head coach Tom Coughlin also appreciated the defensive end’s return.
Giants are the defending Super Bowl champions and as they prepare of the 2012 season, their road to playoff seems tougher, let alone the defence of the title.
In the National Football Conference (NFC) East, they face a strong competition from Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys, while Washington Redskins might also come up with something new after addition of rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III.
It is in the best interest of Giants to have their key players like Osi dedicating their entire attention to the game.
