New York Giants’ David Baas seeks development at centre – NFL News
New York Giants’ defenseman, David Baas, has played at multiple positions throughout his National Football League (NFL) career, but he is going to start the upcoming season at centre – the position where he played last season – as the player looks to develop
himself at one permanent position.
Baas started his professional NFL career in 2005 with San Francisco 49ers.
During his six-year stint with the 49ers, Baas played at centre, right guard and left guard for a number of times.
He did enjoy the versatility, but was unable to develop himself as a competent player at any permanent position.
He joined the Giants last year and started 11 games at centre.
He will get the same role for the second straight season in 2012. This is something unusual for Baas as he has been continuously playing as a rotational player whose services have been utilised at different positions.
According to the details present on the team’s official website, Baas is attending organised team activities (OTAs) and looking forward to developing as a centre.
He said:
“This will be my second time on the same team that I’ve played the same position instead of bouncing around. I’m starting to establish that position and work on some things that I definitely need to work on to make this team better.”
Giants are entering the 2012 season as the defending Super Bowl champions and almost all players are participating in OTAs.
They were unfortunate to lose a few players during the free agency, but the roster is still filled with plenty of talent.
While acknowledging that players come and go in this business keeping their future and best interest in mind, Baas mentioned that the team management had done a lot of hard work to add the best possible players on the roster during this year’s draft.
He said:
“We’ve got some new guys that we need to step up. I think [the front office] did a great job in the draft, honestly. We’ve got a good group of guys here. Guys need to step up. There’s plenty of room for improvement for us, too, though.”
Giants will have a total of nine OTAs this offseason.
