New York Giants’ David Wilson excited about turning pro – NFL News
When Virginia Tech's running back, David Wilson, entered New York’s Radio City Music Hall to attend first day of the National Football League (NFL) 2012 draft on Thursday, April 26, little did he know what was awaiting him.
As it was already expected, Indianapolis Colts selected Andrew Luck and Washington Redskins settled with Robert Griffin III, but observers had little idea what other teams had in mind for their respective picks.
The same was the case with all players who were expecting to get picked by any franchise of the league. And Wilson’s story was not different.
With each team utilising its pick, pressure began surmounting on Wilson who was yet to grab attention of any team.
The first 10 picks were announced and Wilson’s name was not there, and the same happened with the next 10. He waited and waited and 10 more picks were announced. The hall had not heard announcement of Wilson’s name and he had virtually lost hope of getting
drafted in the first round.
However, with just two minutes left before the draft proceedings were supposed to over, Wilson received a phone call – a call that would determine the course of his future.
The defending Super Bowl champions, New York Giants, who had the last pick (32nd) in the first round, were telling Wilson on the phone that they had decided to draft him.
The world changed for him all of a sudden and he was no more a college player. He had turned pro and that too by becoming a Giant; it was a dream come true for him.
While giving an interview to WFAN after getting drafted, Wilson shared his experience of the draft day. He said:
“When two minutes were on the clock, I’m thinking to myself, ‘How am I going to sleep? Am I going to get to go to sleep? Because that’s a lot of pressure to have on you overnight.”
He wanted to play professional football since he was a child and nothing stopped him from achieving his goal.
Wilson said:
“It’s something I’ve been working toward for a long time, and having that dream come true and coming to a special team like the New York Giants, it doesn’t get much better than that. It’s like a dream come true.”
Giants have a few more picks left for the next rounds of the draft.
