New York Giants GM Jerry Reese, head coach Tom Coughlin appreciate TE Martellus Bennett – NFL News
Back in the 2011 season tight end Martellus Bennett played for the Dallas Cowboys, hoping to get more playing time. That did not happen, and the player eventually joined the New York Giants where he was promised more time on the field.
Bennett was desperate to spend more time on the field and after the season he has somewhat proved that his selection was right.
Bennett started all 16 games of the regular season for the Giants and ended up catching a total of 55 passes for 626 yards and scored five touchdowns.
Giants head coach Tom Coughlin is of the view that the tight end has made an outstanding progress. Coughlin said of Bennett, via Giants’ website:
“I think he was looking for an opportunity to play, and contribute and be more productive, and he certainly got it. He learned, to his credit, as he went along, learned what we asked him to do, and how he performed in answering those questions, and so on
and so forth, and did make a strong contribution.”
Meanwhile, Giants general manager Jerry Reese has also appreciated the effort put up by Bennett for the Giants in his first season with the team.
However, there is one main concern that could affect both the Giants management and Bennett. The Giants had signed the tight end on a one-year deal and since the season is over the player will now become a free agent.
If the Giants want to have the player back, they will have to beat or at least match the offer Bennett gets from other teams in the league.
Although Bennett has not yet spoken if he has been approached by any other team, there is a fair chance that the player would be contacted by a few teams now, if he is not already contacted.
It is also not clear if the Giants will offer him something big so as to retain the player because they have to deal with salary cap issues. Reese said of retaining the tight end:
“All players like to get to free agency and Martellus is a free agent. Again, we’re in the evaluation process, we’ll see how it plays out.”
