New York Giants’ Hakeem Nicks suffers broken foot, likely to sit out three months – NFL News
The New York Giants received a serious blow on Thursday, May 24, 2012, when their wide receiver, Hakeem Nicks, who was the leading receiver in the Super Bowl XLVI matchup that the Giants won, suffered a broken foot during organised team activity (OTA) workout.
According to the details present on the team’s official website, Nicks fractured the fifth metatarsal of his right foot during an individual drill and will be out for at least 10-12 weeks.
As per different reports, he might take a little longer time to recover owing to the serious nature of the injury.
Nicks has been playing for Giants since starting his professional National Football League (NFL) career in 2009.
In his rookie season, he was given relatively less playing time, but he has been playing as a regular starter since the last two seasons.
In the 2010 regular season, he started 12 games while playing 13 and recorded 1,052 yards on 79 receptions while scoring 11 touchdowns.
In the last regular season, he played and started 15 games in which he managed 1,192 yards on 76 receptions and scored seven touchdowns.
In the postseason, he registered 444 yards on 28 receptions while scoring four touchdowns.
Nicks’ injury is a serious setback for the defending Super Bowl champions who had just started their OTAs.
Nicks is expected to undergo a surgery on Friday and have a s***w inserted into the broken bone.
He is also expected to miss the mandatory minicamp in June and his participation in July’ training camp is also in jeopardy.
Giants are going to play the next season’s opening game against the Dallas Cowboys on September 5 and Nicks might be able to join the team for the game.
Meanwhile, Nicks has hoped for early recovery, saying that he wants to be a part of training camp in July.
Giants’ head coach, Tom Coughlin, has also hoped the same. He told the NFL Network:
"He [Nicks] feels very confident about it. The doctors have expressed it as being something that they think will heal very, very well."
He added:
"You’re going to be sitting right up next to that opening game, and we certainly hope that Hakeem is correct in saying that he heals fast."
