New York Giants Hakeem Nicks upbeat about the 2012 season – NFL News
It seems that the New York Giants wide receiver Hakeem Nicks is ready to get his foot out of walking boots and get back to training when training camp starts.
While talking to WFNZ in his hometown of Charlotte this weekend, Nicks spoke about his fitness and said:
“Definitely making training camp. I started running about two weeks [ago] but the coaches don’t really want me to force the issue right now so I still haven’t started running yet.”
Last month, Nicks broke his foot during an Organised Team Activity (OTA). As soon as he got injured, he knew he would be out for a considerable time. Nicks said:
“I heard it in my body. It was like a little snap on the side of my foot. I knew it right away."
Nicks was a major force for Giants in winning the Super Bowl XLVI. Last season, he compiled seven touchdowns, received 76 passes and covered 1,192 passing yards.
After the injury to Nicks, Giants were facing problems at the wide receiver position, especially after Mario Manningham’s departure to San Francisco 49ers.
For Nicks’ backup, Giants had their second-round pick Rueben Randle, who was reportedly having difficulty in learning the Giants’ offence.
It would have been very difficult for Giants to cope up with this problem. Thankfully for them, Nicks is getting ready for the training camp which starts on July 26.
Nick has played three seasons for Giants in which he has completed 24 touchdowns and received 202 passes while covering 3,034 yards.
If the Giants desire to get the results like they got in the 2011 season, they need the Nicks-Eli Manning partnership to flourish again.
This is the reason why Giants’ coaching and training team is very careful in Nick’s case. The player has a foot injury and such injuries can recur during the season. Nicks said:
“They want me to just take my time with it — they feel like that’s what’s best. So right now I’m just taking my time with it. … But I’ll definitely be ready for the season.”
When asked if his foot was still in walking boot, Nicks said:
“No, I’m not in nothing no more.”
Although Nick has taken his foot out of the walking boot, he has to take good care of his injury to play the whole season.
