New York Giants’ Lawrence Tynes misses field goal as Philadelphia Eagles get another comeback win
New York Giants kicker Lawrence Tynes missed a field goal attempt in the final few seconds of fourth quarter as Philadelphia Eagles defeated the defending Super Bowl champions, 19-17, on Sunday, September 30, at Lincoln Financial Field in their Week 4 game.
The Eagles, who came from behind to take the lead from the Giants towards the end of the final quarter, could not help but pray for the missed field goal attempt, and after their Week 3 loss, fortune seemed to have got in their favour again. Their hopes
came true when Tynes fell short on a 54-yard attempt.
CBSSPORTS quoted Tynes as saying after the game:
“It's a tough kick, a kick I can make, a kick I made in my career to win a game before.”
The game also saw an improved performance from Eagles quarterback Michael Vick, who completed 19 of his 30 passes for 241 yards and got one touchdown.
Most of the game went neck-and-neck and Giants could have easily won it had Tynes not missed the field goal.
Giants and Eagles started off rather slowly, as no scoring move was made in first quarter. Vick and DeSean Jackson connected for a 19-yard score in second quarter to get the lead.
Giants got a field goal towards the end of the quarter.
Eagles stretched their lead after halftime by getting a field goal in third quarter. However, Giants levelled the score when quarterback Eli Manning connected with wide receiver Victor Cruz for a 14-yard score.
Eagles got a field goal in the quarter to once again take the lead.
Eagles stretched their lead in the final quarter by scoring another field goal, but Giants once again managed to steal the lead as Manning sent a six-yard touchdown pass to Bear Pascoe with less than seven minutes left in the game.
With less than two minutes left in the game, Eagles again grabbed the lead by scoring a field goal, leaving Giants two points behind.
Giants initiated a playing drive towards the end and managed to cover enough distance to set up a field goal that was eventually missed by Tynes.
Vick said after the win:
"Every game is not going to be perfect and it’s not going to always be a situation where things come easy. We struggled in the beginning. Our offensive line jelled together and we really challenged one another to get better throughout the course of the game.
I’m extremely proud of those guys that did that … You have to persevere in this game. It’s a tough game."
Eagles are now 3-1 and leading National Football Conference (NFC) East, while Giants are at the bottom of the division with 2-2.
Giants will play their Week 5 game on home against Cleveland Browns while Eagles will take on Pittsburgh Steelers on the latter’s home field.
