New York Giants President and CEO John Mara: The worst thing to do is to be impatient – NFL News
The New York Giants started their campaign for the 2011 season on a negative note after getting defeated against the Washington Redskins, but they successfully managed to perform better in the next few games.
However, their performance was once again brought under the first when halfway through the season they went on to lose four straight games.
Despite the criticism, the team remained intact and managed to overcome the slump to qualify for the playoffs. They played superbly in the postseason and eventually won the Super Bowl.
The criticism from fans and the media during the regular season did not affect the team at all.
While criticising the team, many claimed that the line-up should be changed and some even called for firing head coach Tom Coughlin, but the franchise’s President and Chief Executive Officer John Mara followed his plans.
Instead of giving up to the pressure and criticism, he allowed the coach to follow his plans and his trust paid off as the team won the Super Bowl.
Mara believes that being impatient is not the solution to any problem and that’s how he dealt with his own team. Rather than pressing the panic button when the team was slumping, he gave the players and the management the much needed breathing space.
According to the details present on the team’s official website, Mara spoke to Mike Francesa on WFAN and while asserting that he has learnt to be patient, the CEO said:
“The worst thing you can do is be impatient and make quick decisions based on pressure from the media or pressure from the fans. You have to have a conviction that you have the right people working for you and then you have to give them a chance to do their
job. You’ve got to be able to stay with them when things aren’t going quite so well. Fortunately we’ve been able to do that.”
He also mentioned that he never gave up on Coach Coughlin and said that he is pleased with the way the team recovered from the skid to win the title. He said:
“I never lost faith in Tom [Coughlin]. I knew he was a good head coach. I knew he could win for us.”
