New York Giants Prince Amukamara beginning to understand the system – NFL News
Cornerback Prince Amukamara made his National Football League (NFL) debut last year in a rather unwanted way as just a day after being drafted he was sidelined with an injury that would force him out for more than half of the season.
He did his best to recover and rehab while learning the new playbook and when he returned to the field his performance did not raise many questions as he regularly attended all the team meetings while nursing his injury.
He is fit and healthy now and unlike last year he was able to attend the team’s offseason activities this year that helped him understand the system in an even better way.
According to the details present on the team’s official website, Amukamara has started to learn the team’s defence well now.
It is the same defence that was unable to perform well at the beginning of the 2011 season, but later recovered from the slump to lead the team to the Super Bowl win.
Amukamara played seven games last season and recorded a total of 14 tackles and made one interception. The player is expecting to register better stats in the upcoming season.
He has learned the team’s language and said of the defence:
“It doesn’t look like a different language anymore. I understand the language really well, and I’m getting a good idea of what our defence is trying to get done.”
He added:
“[Last year] I got a lot of learning in. I was never away from the meetings. I was always in every meeting, including special teams, and then just being on the field just helps that much more. I think people learn better when they’re actually in the activity.”
Amukamara still has a couple of weeks before Giants training camp kicks off. He is also expected to participate in all preseason games, but his role in the upcoming season is not yet determined.
There are chances that he might not become the starter, but there is a strong indication that if he manages to stay fit and healthy and impresses the coaches during training camp and preseason, he will get more playing time than the last season.
