New York Giants and DE Osi Umenyiora resolve contract issue, finally – NFL News
The months of hype and speculations are finally over as New York Giants and defensive end, Osi Umenyiora, have agreed to fresh deal terms.
The deal issue between both parties has been in the limelight since a long period of time.
On one hand, it was Osi, who repeatedly asked for a new deal with better financial terms. He also demanded more playing time and said that he did not want to play as a backup player.
On the other hand, Giants’ management, while not spilling the beans, maintained that the franchise wanted to extend association with Osi for a long period of time.
However, the developments that led to the current conclusions suggested otherwise.
Osi’s demand was not heard in the way he wanted while Giants kept on asserting that they would reach an agreement with the player. The financial matters were reportedly the main cause of the deadlock between the two parties.
Meanwhile, Giants also gave a contract extension to Osi’s teammate, linebacker Mathias Kiwanuka.
Later, Giants’ general manager, Jerry Reese also said that he had offered a contract extension to Osi, but the player denied the offer.
In reply, Osi informed that the value of the offered deal was very low.
Osi got so dejected that he decided not to comment on the deal matter. He was also not participating in organised team activities (OTAs).
All these developments do not matter now. Osi had one year left on his contract and instead of giving the player a contract extension, Giants have restructured terms of the contract, adding more monetary benefits in it.
This has pleased both Giants and the player, for the time being at least.
According to the details present on the team’s official website, Reese appreciated Osi’s patience and said:
“I appreciate Osi’s patience and effort through this process. We talked it out, and it makes sense for everybody involved. We are very pleased, excited and looking forward to seeing number 72 on the field at Monday’s OTA.”
Osi is also pleased. He said:
“This gives me peace of mind, definitely. We just resolved a situation. It really was affecting me in a bad way. Because I didn’t like all the negativity that was surrounding the whole situation. I couldn’t stand it, because if you know me, you know I’m
not that type of person.”
It is now up to Osi to keep his focus on the game and help Giants defend the Super Bowl title in the upcoming season.
