New York Giants and Eli Manning agree to restructure the player’s deal to settle salary cap issue
Super Bowl XLVI Most Valuable Player (MVP) and New York Giants’ quarterback, Eli Manning, has agreed to restructure his deal with the team so as to cut down the salary expenses.
The deal has not yet been made public, but different reports citing credible sources have claimed this news to be authentic.
Manning started his professional National Football League (NFL) career in 2004 with Giants. He has two Super Bowl rings under his belt.
The last NFL season was his best. He played all the games in the regular season and completed 359 passes of 589 attempts for 4,933 yards while throwing 29 touchdowns and 16 interceptions.
During the postseason, he sent nine touchdowns and one interception while completing 106 passes of 163 attempts for 1,219 yards.
In 2009, Manning signed a contract extension with Giants. The new contract, which was extended through six years, valued $97 million.
Manning’s base salary was $10.75 million. Now as per the new deal, his base salary will be around $1.75 million. However, he will receive the rest of the payment in the form of guaranteed bonus sometime later.
The amount that Giants have saved after restructuring Manning’s deal will allow them to sign some free agents from the free agency market, which will start next week.
Giants are already dealing with some issues regarding re-signing their players. Wide receiver, Mario Manningham, who caught a spectacular pass during the Super Bowl XLVI matchup during the game-winning drive, has demanded an increase in his salary. If he
does not get the pay raise, he might leave the Giants.
So, by restructuring Manning’s deal, Giants will get some breathing space in terms of hiring new players.
Earlier, running back, Brandon Jacobs, who had already restructured his deal last year, also offered to do so again so as to say with the team for a long time.
Meanwhile, Giants are also willing to redo the contract of running back, Ahmad Bradshaw. However, despite the interest of both parties in restructuring the deal, an agreement is yet to be reached.
On the other hand, a Giants’ spokesperson has also confirmed that Bradshaw underwent a medical procedure recently to treat his fractured foot.
