New York Giants and New England Patriots excited about the Super rematch – NFL News Update
New York Giants and New England Patriots are going to battle in the Super Bowl XVLI in Indianapolis on February 5, 2012, and this matchup has caused a stirring effect on almost everyone including the fans and the players.
These two teams also met in the Super Bowl 2007-08 where the Giants ended the Patriots unbeaten run in the season, 17-14, and grabbed the title.
After that season, none of these teams managed to qualify for the Super Bowl.
The Giants reached the playoffs once, whereas the Patriots appeared in the postseason two times before the present National Football League (NFL) season.
As luck would have it, the teams have won their respective conferences this time and earned a matchup again.
The Giants defeated San Francisco 49ers, 20-17, in the National Football Conference (NFC) championship game, while the Patriots overcame Baltimore Ravens, 23-20, to win the American Football Conference (AFC).
Surprisingly, Tom Coughlin was coaching the Giants and Bill Belichick was Patriots’ coach back in 2007. And now when these two sides have got an opportunity to play again, the head coaches who are still the same will also utilise the chance to recall the
past memories.
Moreover, the quarterbacks are also the same. The Giants were represented by Eli Manning and the Patriots by Tom Brady.
To make matters more interesting, both these players are considered by the NFL for the title of Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the season.
“It’s incredible,” said Brady. “You pinch yourself to get this opportunity. I’m privileged to be part of an incredible organisation and to play with a great group of teammates. It’s really a privilege to play quarterback on this team.”
"It's awesome and we look forward to the challenge," Giants defensive end, Osi Umenyiora, said. "They are a great football team. They have always been a great football team. We are looking forward to it, and it's going to be a great game."
The Patriots are certainly seeking revenge and would not want to go down for the second straight time against the same opponent in the competition of utmost reputation.
On the other hand, the resurging Giants are by the toughest opposition the Pats could have expected.
According to different reports, this matchup can also become the most-watched TV show of the year, but even if that does not happen, no one can ignore the intense craze, frenzy this matchup has developed.
