New York Giants beat New England Patriots in the Super Bowl XLVI
A late comeback by the resurging New York Giants gave them a victory in the Super Bowl XLVI as the startled New England Patriots were left in awe at the Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis on February 5, 2012.
The final scores settled at 21-17.
Giants’ quarterback, Eli Manning, received the much needed support from his defensive unit, which put the Giants in lead in the first quarter after sacking Patriots’ quarterback, Tom Brady, in his own end zone.
Later at the end of the quarter, Manning, combined with one of his favourite receivers, Victor Cruz, for a two-yard touchdown.
The Pats, who were struggling to gain possession in the first quarter, fought back in the second.
Stephen Gostkowski’s 29-yard field goal reduced the lead, and Brady found Danny Woodhead from four yards in the final seconds of the quarter to give Patriots the lead, 10-9.
Brady had found his rhythm and built on the momentum in the third quarter. At 11:20, he combined with Aaron Hernandez for a 12-yard touchdown to shock the Giants.
New York strived hard in the rest of the quarter, but Manning was unable to penetrate the Pats’ defence and could never reach the end zone.
However, he was smart enough to set up two field goals, which reduced the deficit to two points only.
Both the teams tried hard to make a scoring move in the final quarter, but the defence stayed dominant.
However, at the end when it was looking that Brady will get his fourth Super Bowl ring, Manning crushed the former’s dream one more time and initiated a brilliant drive that resulted in a touchdown with less than a minute left on the clock.
Giants went for a two-point conversion, but failed. It never mattered, as they were already singing the winning songs.
Manning thanked the fans in Indianapolis and all over the world after the victory, which, he said, was a result of team effort.
He said:
“The guys had great faith in each other. We had a great game plan, we made some big time plays Great effort by the whole team.”
