New York Giants bring Chicago Bears unbeaten run to an end - Part one
The Bears were looking so good until Sunday. They had been unbeaten in their first three games against Detroit, Dallas and Green Bay. In each of those games, the Bears appeared to be dominant and in control. But after going head-to-head against the New York
Giants, the Bears undefeated run is now beginning to look more and more like a fluke.
The Bears weren’t just defeated. They were pulverized into oblivion. The outcome, 3 for Chicago against 17 for New York, was just humiliating. New York gave away a total of 110 yards to quarterbacks Cutler, Collins and Hanie. New York’s Eli Manning, on the
other hand passed 195 yards and was complemented with running back Ahmad Bradshaw’s 129 yards rushing.
After the kickoff, the Giants defence extended a warm welcome to Chicago. Chicago started with a 5 yard penalty and made up for it in the next two plays. New York then sacked Jay Cutler in the third play of the drive and the quarterback’s second pass attempt.
Cutler was getting heat from his right side as the Giants’ defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul and defensive tackle Barry Cofield moved in on him. As the two approached Cutler, the quarterback figured the best option for him would be to move up through the middle.
Cutler almost pushed through the traffic but Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora, came from his side and pulled Cutler to the ground for -4 yards.
Brad Maynard took the punt in the next play which New York returned for no gain. The Giants started on the 17 yard line and moved up to the 26 yard line in 3 plays before the punt. The Giants lost possession after less than a minute of taking possession.
The Bears fared no better. Starting on their 37 quarterback, Jay Cutler completed two passes for 13 yards and then got sacked again. Cutler had two drives and two sacks so far in the game. The second sack for the game belonged to defensive tackle Chris Canty.
On the right side, offensive lineman Kevin Shaffer tried to stop New York’s defensive end but Justin Tuck was unable to do so. Tuck moved on the quarterback from his right while Canty was coming straight up the middle. Roberto Garza was trying to block Canty
but he wouldn’t be held back. While Cutler looked for a receiver, the two Giants boxed him in. First Canty rammed into Cutler, followed by Justin Tuck running into both men and taking them down. The sacking cost the Bears 9 yards.
Cutler was able to take back the lost yard in the next play as he completed a 9 yard pass. The Bears then took their first timeout. After the timeout Cutler returned with a pass directed at wide receiver Devin Hester which he could not complete. With another
failed attempt, the Bears had no option but to punt the ball. The first half of the first quarter was slow for both teams’ offenses and had not seen any points being put on the board. That would change now as Ahmad Bradshaw led the Giant’s next drive with
a little more spice. He made the first three plays for the giants and rushed 32 yards. In the third play, for a 20 yard rush, it took four Bears to Bring down the lone Giant Bradshaw.
With that Rush, the Giants moved to Chicago’s 48 yard line. In the next four plays, the Eli Manning took the Giants into the Redzone on the 12 yard line but couldn’t move any closer in the next three plays. In the tenth play, Manning completed an 8 yard
pass to get within 4 yards of the endzone and Lawrence Tynes took the field goal.
When the Bears were on the offensive again, their drive broke down in the third play as Cutler attempted to pass towards Greg Olsen but was intercepted by Terrell Thomas on Chicago’s 27 yard line for one yard. Just less than two minutes remained in the quarter
and Giants were just 28 yards from the endzone. The Giants were still not able to drive the distance against Chicago’s defence and got into field goal formation.
Tynes made the attempt. The ball was just slightly off target to the left as the quarter came to an end. Giants led by three against the Bears’ zero.
