New York Giants bring Chicago Bears unbeaten run to an end Part Three
Offensively Sunday’s Chicago Bears vs the New York Giants was as dull as watching paint dry. The first half saw just one field goal and the second didn’t even have that. Chicago’s quarterback Cutler had been bullied off the field after being sacked 10 times
in the 2 quarters.
The third quarter was still slow as far as scoring is concerned. The first 7 minutes saw the Bears and the Giants drive and fail one after the other. The total yards travelled for both teams until the 8th minute and in 16 plays, was just 24 yards.
In the 8th minute the offense finally picked up a little. The Giants had possession and quarterback Eli Manning was leading the charge from New York’s 10 yard line. In 3 plays and a penalty New York moved up 5 yards. But then Manning threw a 21
yard deep left pass at Hakeem Nicks. Ahmad Bradshaw followed it up with a 13 yard rush. Manning then came through with a 25 yard deep left pass to Travis Beckum. Beckum was being followed by Charles Tillman and Chris Harris who took him down as soon as he
got his hands on the ball.
Ahmad Bradshaw then rushed 25 yards right through Chicago’s defence. Cornerback Tillman was only able to get to Bradshaw when he was just a yard short of touchdown. Bradshaw finished of the 90 yards drive with a 3 yard touchdown run. The Bears were onto
him but the Giants powered through to the endzone for the touchdown. The Field goal was good and there were no more scoring drives in the quarter. The scores stood at 10 against 0.
The Bears started the 4th quarter from the 31 yard line and the drive opened with an interception which was overturned because of a penalty. Pierre-Paul made the interception and had even carried the ball 16 yards. With the 15 yards penalty and
a 19 yards pass by quarterback Todd Collins, who was standing in for Cutler, the Bears were at the Giants 35 yard line but couldn’t move a single yard in the next two plays. A frustrated Collins then threw a pass at Greg Olsen which was intercepted by Deon
Grant. Collins overshoot Olsen by miles and landed the ball straight into Grant’s hands on the 8 yard line.
When Manning took over he was able to drive 25 yards in 5 plays but then the Giants fumbled the ball on the 33 yard line. Manning was handing over the ball to running back Brandon Jacobs but Jacobs couldn’t hold on. Safety Chris Harris recovered the ball
for Chicago on the 29 yard line. Todd Collins tried to creep up to the endzone but the Giants wouldn’t stand idly. Collins completed a 7 yard pass and was just 22 yards from the endzone after 3 plays. The Bears got into field goal formation. Robbie Gould made
the field goal attempt and it was good. The first points for the Bears came almost 50 minutes into the game and these would be the only the Bears would be able to put on the scoreboard.
The Giants started the next drive on the 30 yard line after returning 24 yards on a 64 yard kick. Manning took the Giants slowly downfield. On the 36 yard line Ahmad Bradshaw rushed successfully through Chicago’s defensive line and was heading clear for
the endzone with cornerback Zackary Bowman in pursuit. Bowman was able to catch up to Bradshaw and as he tackled him Bradshaw lost the ball and both men dived at the loose ball. Bowman though was the one to get his hands on it just one yard short of the endzone.
The Bears were unable to push forward from the one yard line and Maynards 39 yards punt was returned for 9 yards by running back Garret Wolfe. Manning completed a 30 yard pass from the 32 yard line to close in on touchdown. Zackary Bowman tried to cover
Haleem Nicks but Manning was able to connect. The drive was finished off with a 2 yards touchdown run by Brandon Jacobs.
New York was now at 17 while Chicago was trailing far behind at just three points. Neither teams scored in the final 4 minutes. Chicago’s suffered its first and defeat this season and it couldn’t have been worst.
