New York Giants co-owner, John Mara, praises coach, Tom Coughlin, after making it to the Super Bowl
While praising New York Giants’ coach, Tom Coughlin, after getting a victory against San Francisco 49ers in the National Football Conference (NFC) championship game on Sunday, January 22, 2012, franchise’ co-owner, president and chief executive officer (CEO),
John Mara, said that it is the right time to answer all those who had criticised the coach throughout the season.
The Giants were virtually eliminated from the National Football League (NFL) regular season, but a slump from Dallas Cowboys and the late progress from the Giants ensured the latter’s entry into the playoffs as the NFC East division leaders.
They improved with every game and defeated Atlanta Falcons in the postseason, followed by a victory against the defending Super Bowl Champions, Green Bay Packers, and now the 49ers, to earn a matchup with New England Patriots in the Super Bowl XVLI, to be
played in Indianapolis on February 5.
Mara thinks that the feat would not have been achievable without Coughlin.
“I give a lot of credit to Tom Coughlin pulling this team together and getting this team on this kind of run,” Mara said.
“Hopefully our fans in the New York/New Jersey area will start to appreciate him a little more.”
“Nobody would’ve predicted that we would’ve been here right now back in early November. But we’re here and I think he deserves most of the credit for this,” he added.
NFL Network reporter, Albert Breer, while referring to his conversation with Mara, mentioned that the owner received plenty of letters from the fans during the season, demanding Coughlin’s dismissal as the franchise’s head coach.
Mara thinks that the coach has silenced the critics after leading the team to the Super Bowl – something he also did in the 2007-08 season, in fact the Giants won the Super Bowl that season.
Mara further praised Coughlin:
“Nobody works harder than he does. Nobody wants to win more than he does. And he knows how to win.”
There is no denying the fact that the 65-year-old Coughlin is now going to stay with the Giants for as long as he plans.
His contract, which is going to expire next year, is likely to get an extension after the Super Bowl, regardless of what the result is.
