New York Giants’ coach, Tom Coughlin, not contemplating retirement – NFL News Update
New York Giants’ head coach, Tom Coughlin, has given the franchise two Super Bowl victories and he is hungry for more.
A day after leading Giants to the Super Bowl XLVI victory against New England Patriots, the 65-year-old coach expressed his desire on Monday, February 6, 2012, of staying with the Giants.
Coughlin is indeed the best option for Giants.
During the regular season of the National Football League (NFL) when the team was experiencing a slump, many fans called for dismissing the head coach.
However, Giants displayed a drastic improvement in their game-play and first won the National Football Conference (NFC) East division, then the NFC championship title, and most recently the highest honour of the league, the Super Bowl.
Now all those fans are cheering for the Giants and hoping for Coughlin to come back next year.
Coughlin certainly has no issues in returning. He said:
“I certainly hope so. My intentions are to be that way. I do have some ownership that has to give approval, but I’m looking forward to it.”
Mentioning the ownership clearly implies that Coughlin is going to be the head coach in the next season.
Giants’ co-owner, president and chief executive officer (CEO), John Mara, had already expressed his confidence in Coughlin.
After winning the NFC championship, Mara praised Coughlin and gave all the credit to the coach’s experience and his ability to develop team chemistry.
Mara had said before the Super Bowl XLVI victory that:
“Nobody would’ve predicted that we would’ve been here right now back in early November. But we’re here and I think he (Coughlin) deserves most of the credit for this.”
Some observers also speculated that if Coughlin managed to win the Super Bowl XLVI, he would retire from the league.
Even at that point Mara rubbished the assumptions.
He commented about the possibility of Coughlin’s retirement that:
“No, I don’t think so. He’s having too much fun.”
Now that Coughlin himself has expressed a desire of coaching the Giants again and with the trust of the upper management, it will not surprise anyone to see him aiming for another Super Bowl victory for Giants next year.
