New York Giants confident about Super Bowl victory – NFL News Update
While expressing hopes of regaining lost glory, the New York Giants’ linebacker, Mathias Kiwanuka, and defensive end, Osi Umenyiora, claimed on Thursday, January 5, 2012, that the Giants have got what it takes to be a Super Bowl team.
It has been a few years since the Giants won their last championship back in 2007, which has them working towards another one, possibly this time around.
Considering the record the Giants have maintained throughout the season, the opponents they are expected to face in the playoffs, one might assume that the players are bragging about their team’s chances.
After starting the recently concluded 2011 National Football League (NFL) regular season in a commendable manner, the Giants went on to lose four straight games in the second half of the season.
They were almost eliminated from the playoff-contention, but fortune favoured them.
The Dallas Cowboys, who were leading the National Football Conference (NFC)-East Division, lost four of their last five games. The Giants grabbed the opportunity and registered three victories in last four games to lead the division and enter the postseason
where they are going to compete with one of the league’s finest teams.
Kiwanuka thinks that the Giants were bothered slightly by the injuries of their star players, but maintained that the team is back in form. He asserted that the players are confident and competent enough to face the tough opponents in the knockout phase.
"We had some injuries early on in the year. You can point to a number of different things for reasons why we weren't playing the way we should. But the issue is right now we're finally clicking and we're getting there", Kiwanuka said.
Meanwhile, defensive end, Osi Umenyiora, who was also a part of the Giants team that won the Super Bowl in 2007, has said that the current offensive line is much better than it was back then. However, he pointed out that defence needs a lot of improvement,
but added that everyone is working hard to overcome the flaws.
"We probably have a better offense than we did (in 2007). Defensively, our pass rush, we were crazy back then, I think we are getting to the level now that we were back then. Defensively we can get better and we are playing very, very well on defence”, Umenyiora
said.
It’s thrilling to see that the Giants’ players are trying to boost the morale as they prepare to host Atlanta Falcons on Sunday. However, the reality cannot be ignored that even if they beat the Falcons, opponents like New England Patriots and the defending
Super Bowl champions, Green Bay Packers are going to put up some tough competition for them later on.
