New York Giants’ couple of injury scares late in Super Bowl XLVI game not affected their win – NFL News
The New York Giants faced a couple of injury scares in their Super Bowl game against the New England Patriots on Sunday, February 05, 2012, without having much impact on their performance since all those injuries came in the later part of the game.
One of the injured players is their tight end, Travis Beckum, who is reported to have torn his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). He was treated for the injury on the sidelines, initially, and later test reports confirmed his injury was ACL.
The player is expected to have a surgery on his knee sometimes in the offseason and is likely to return to the side before commencing of the next (2012) season.
Another injured player was also a tight end, Jake Ballard, who injured his left knee in the fourth quarter of the game, and could not return to play again due to serious pain in his knee.
Ballard is expected to have an MRI scan later this week, which is likely to determine the status of his injury. There is a possibility that his injury might be similar to the Beckum ACL and the player might need a surgery as well.
Both the players were inspected by the team’s medical staff on the sidelines and did not participate for the remaining part of the game, which was in the last quarter and therefore their absence from the field was not felt as much by their team.
These were the only two injuries the team had faced with during the game as otherwise their squad remained intact healthy and fit.
Giants are not going to be affected by these injuries now either as there are no more games left into the 2011 National Football League season, with winning of the NFL championship game, Super Bowl on past Sunday.
This is the second time that the New York Giants have won the Super Bowl game against the New England Patriots, after they had toppled them in 2008 championship.
Both, Beckum and Ballard had greater role, respectively in their team’s performance and wins. Beckum’s contribution included five catches for 93 yards and a touchdown.
Interestingly, Giants have lost a number of players to knee injury in and after the regular season and a majority of the players are defensive ends.
Those who suffered the knee injuries during the regular season included their linebacker, Jonathan Goff, and cornerback, Terrell Thomas.
They had suffered the injuries, respectively, before start of the regular season and had to miss few games of the earlier part of the season before recovering and joining of their squad, again.
With reporting of Beckum and Ballard having suffered knee injuries, Giants have as many as four players with knee problems.
