New York Giants’ defence pledges to overpower New England Patriots’ offence – NFL News
The Super Bowl Media Day on Tuesday, January 31, 2012, provided a lot of room for fancy gossip material coupled with humorous remarks and reactions from the players involved in the big matchup, but not everything stayed on the lighter side.
In between all the talks that could be featured as a conversational currency for many, New York Giants’ defensive unit firmly pledged that it would not allow New England Patriots’ offence to score points.
The first and foremost task for the defence is to control Patriots’ quarterback, Tom Brady, who has won the Super Bowl three times in his 12-year career.
Giants’ defensive end, Justin Tuck, thinks that his team should use the same strategy against the Pats as it did four years ago when these two sides met in the Super Bowl XLII.
Brady was sacked, hit and forced to fumble the ball as a result of which the Pats lost the game.
Tuck believes that guarding Brady’s receiver is also a good option to bring the quarterback under pressure.
He said of Brady that;
"I think he gets a little frustrated when he has to go to his second or third receivers.”
Tuck added:
“You can kind of confuse him sometimes with our coverage. I think there are a lot of things that can get him rattled, but it just seems like not too many people are able to do that."
The same sentiments were more or less shared by safety Kenny Phillips.
When asked about how the Giants are going to tackle Patriots’ offence, Phillips said that Brady should not be given any room to throw the ball.
“Just try to be tight in coverage,” he said.
While appreciating Brady’s performance, he warned his teammates saying if Brady is allowed to stay free on the field, its repercussions would not be very laudable.
Phillips remarked:
“He definitely is a gunslinger. Even though you have guys covered up he throws them open. It’s definitely key to just stay close in coverage and for those guys up front to really get after him.”
There is no denying the fact that both the teams have worked hard to reach this far and are equally aware of what is at stake.
Giants’ defensive end, Jason Pierre-Paul, who thinks that his team is filled with confidence, has urged the players to give their best shot.
On the other hand, defensive end, Osi Umenyiora, has said that it would not be easy for the defensive line to control Brady.
However, he, like the others, has reiterated that the defence would leave no stone unturned in preventing the Pats from reaching the end zone.
It is evident that Brady is the key for Patriots and if the Giants are able to control him they could once again become the champions.
