New York Giants’ defensive end, Jason Pierre-Paul, gets in the limelight – NFL News Update
New York Giants, defensive end, Jason Pierre-Paul (JPP), who has had a remarkable National Football League (NFL) season this year, has received praise from his teammates ahead of the Super Bowl XLVI game to be played against New England Patriots on Sunday,
February 5, 2012, in Indianapolis.
JPP, who is no more a rookie, got plenty of opportunities to prove his mettle in his second professional season and he, like any athlete worth their salt, has shown that he is among the best players Giants has got.
In his rookie season, he played all the 16 games in the regular season and registered a total of 30 tackles.
This year, he was promoted and given a chance to start 12 out of 16 games in the regular season. He did not let his selectors down and recorded 86 tackles and 16.5 sacks.
In the postseason, he has 16 tackles and 0.5 sack to his name.
Giants’ linebacker, Mathias Kiwanuka, thinks that JPP has transformed from a rookie into a professional player and possesses all the talent a pro needs.
Kiwanuka said of JPP that:
"He probably can do a number of things on the football field but at the position he is at, he definitely excels.
The linebacker added:
“His understanding of what our defence is asking him to do, and you combine that with the point in the season where people started focusing on him and he adjusted to all the double teams and shifts and all that kind of stuff. He's definitely a professional
now."
Kiwanuka is not the only one who is pleased to have JPP in the side.
Veteran defensive end, Osi Umenyiora, whose injury also contributed towards the team management’s decision of introducing JPP as starter, is also impressed by his replacement’s game-play.
He remarked about JPP that:
"He's a thoroughbred. His motor, man, just never stops."
JPP himself believes that a lot of changes have come into his game-play this year.
He admitted that after playing a nervy first year in which he struggled a little bit, he’s developed an understanding of the game.
He also pointed out that he has worked hard on his pass rush and running defence to improve his overall performance.
There is no denying the fact that JPP is one of the best players for New York Giants this year, but it is widely believed and accepted that any performance will never matter if the team does not win its final encounter.
JPP and the rest of the Giants have to ensure a victory over the Pats to be in the limelight for the rest of the year.
