New York Giants’ defensive end, Osi Umenyiora, playing his cards close to his chest – NFL News
New York Giants’ defensive end, Osi Umenyiora, is still not able to get a desired contract extension from the team management and while he has made his mind about his future, he is yet to spill the beans and discuss his plans, different reports suggested
on Thursday, April 12, 2012.
Osi, who has been playing with Giants since starting his professional National Football League (NFL) career in 2013, is in last year of his present contract.
He has reportedly sought a contract extension, which could guarantee a long-term future with the team and for that he was also willing to restructure his deal by accepting a pay cut. However, it seems as if he is yet to reach an agreement with the management.
Giants are going to start their offseason activities from Monday, April 16, 2012, and Osi might not participate in the offseason programme, apparently to assert his serious stance on the new deal.
He commented on the situation:
"You never really know what's going to happen. We'll see what happens on Monday."
In 2005, Osi signed a six-year, $41 million contract extension with the team and he is now hoping to get a similar deal, at least in terms of tenure.
Earlier, Giants’ general manager, Jerry Reese, also hoped that he would be able to settle this matter with Osi.
Reese said earlier:
“I think he loves the Giants. The guy loves to play football. He’s been with us his entire career and I think he’d like to retire a Giant. I can’t speak for him…just guessing, I think that’s what his feelings are.”
Osi, too, seems interested in playing for Giants for throughout his career, but he is not ruling out other options.
Furthermore, he does not want to be playing as backup and wants a more dominating role in the team. He said:
“I don’t like being a backup, I can tell you that. So, who knows how that is going to shake out. Hopefully I’ll be able to stay here and finish out my career, but I just don’t know. I don’t know if it is going to happen."
Giants have already lost wide receiver, Mario Manningham, and running back, Brandon Jacobs, this offseason after failing to reach an agreement on new deals. If Osi also leaves, it will be a huge setback for the team.
