New York Giants desperate to secure a playoff berth – NFL News
As the regular season nears its end, the clouds of uncertainty have covered all the teams of National Football Conference (NFC) East, not Philadelphia Eagles though.
Washington Redskins, Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants are tied atop the division at 8-6. Although every team wants to give its best shot to secure a playoff berth, the desperation showed by defending Super Bowl champions, Giants, is evident.
This is because they once had a very healthy lead in the division and were expected to qualify for the postseason rather easily. However, their performance during the past few weeks have taken them off track.
They have seen a number of ups and downs, and have only won two of their last six games. They are now in a must-win situation if they want to qualify for the postseason as NFC East champions and get a shot at defending their title.
An exit for the Giants without qualifying for the playoffs could be a bit humiliating as they won the National Football League (NFL) title last year after stunning some of very strong teams.
This fear could prove to be a motivator for the Giants, but head coach Tom Coughlin thinks that anything that can drive the team to the postseason is acceptable.
Following Giants’ Week 15 loss against Atlanta Falcons, Coughlin said, via Giants website:
“Whatever it takes. Whatever, you know? We want to be there. That’s where it all started out. You can’t accomplish what you want to…every team in the league starts out, they want one goal. You can’t even have that goal till you get in the playoffs. You spend
your whole time, for us, it’s win the division. That is something that really is not in our control, but being in the playoffs is.”
There is a remote possibility that Giants might be able to make the postseason through a wildcard. However, many other teams from NFC are competing for wildcard playoff berths as well. Although Coughlin will not mind getting a wildcard playoff berth, he
wants his team to give its best shot and win the division. He said:
“Getting in is the important thing, but you like to be playing your best football when you get in. We have to go some to get to accomplish that.”
