New York Giants draft cornerback Jayron Hosley in third round of 2012 draft – NFL News
New York Giants have selected Virginia Tech’s cornerback, Jayron Hosley, in the third round of the 2012 National Football League (NFL) draft.
Hosley was selected as 31st pick of the round and 94th overall on Friday, April 26.
It was Giants third overall pick in the draft. Earlier, Giants had selected Virginia Tech’s running back, David Wilson, in first round of the draft and LSU’s wide receiver, Rueben Randle, was selected in the second round.
It was Giants’ first attempt towards adding strength to their defensive squad as the earlier acquisitions were made keeping the interest of offensive squad in mind.
Giants’ general manager, Jerry Reese, thinks that Hosley is a good selection for the team’s defensive unit as the player is capable of blocking opponents, recording interceptions and tackles besides having good speed.
While talking to media at the end of the second day, Reese said of Hosley:
“He has outstanding cover skills. He’s productive. He’s an interceptor, he can intercept the ball, so we expect him to be in our nickel packages. And a bonus is that he’s a punt returner. He can return punts and kicks, but he’s probably a better punt returner
than kick returner. He has a lot of good qualities that we like.”
His ability to return a punt is what impresses Reese as well as Giants’ head coach, Tom Coughlin, equally.
The head coach thinks that the player can be utilised in various ways, which will certainly provide a helping hand to the squad.
Coughlin said of the player:
“We feel like we can accomplish a lot with this kind of an athlete. He’s not the biggest guy in the world. That was discussed. However, we do think he is a competitive feisty guy and he’s one of those people that has not backed down from anybody.”
It is pertinent to note here that Hosley was unable to clear drug test at the NFL Scouting Combine held in Indianapolis February.
Giants are well aware of this situation and Coughlin has said that the management will ensure taking all the necessary measures to address the issue and resolve it.
Giants have four more picks left in the draft.
