New York Giants’ general manager, Jerry Reese, hopeful to bring back Osi Umenyiora and Brandon Jacobs
New York Giants’ general manager, Jerry Reese, has expressed a hope of bringing back defensive end, Osi Umenyiora, and running back, Brandon Jacobs, for the next season.
However, no final decision has yet been reached and the general manager said that there are certain other issues in this matter that need attention.
At the moment, Giants are dealing with more than 20 players. Some of them will be allowed to enter free agency and some will be retained for more seasons.
It all depends on how the team management evaluates its prospects keeping the budget in mind.
Umenyiora, who signed a six-year contract extension with the Giants in December 2005, will enter the last year of his deal in the next season.
He has expressed a desire of staying with the Giants and is even ready to enter a new contract while receiving a relatively low salary cap.
Reese mentioned that he has not yet spoken to Osi’s agent, but guessed that the player would love to extend his stay with the Giants.
He said of Osi:
“I think he loves the Giants. The guy loves to play football. He’s been with us his entire career and I think he’d like to retire a Giant. I can’t speak for him…just guessing, I think that’s what his feelings are.”
Jacobs, who signed a four-year deal with the franchise in 2009, is also facing the similar situation as Osi’s.
Last year, he restructured his contract and provided cushion for adjustment to the management, who saved a noticeable amount of money after the agreement.
Jacobs has yet again expressed willingness to restructure his contract and has agreed to accept low salary.
By the looks of the things, Giants will hire both of them, but the final call has not been made yet, which leaves room open for all the possibilities.
“We’re still in that process,” Reese said.
He added:
“We still have some discussions to go with respect to that. Hopefully, we can bring both of those guys back. They’ve both been really good football players for us. And we’re hopeful that we can bring them both back.”
Meanwhile, Giants’ wide receiver, Mario Manningham, who will become free agent next month if a new deal is not worked out, has reportedly decided to leave the Giants and join Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
No official announcement has yet been made and Reese has also refrained from commenting anything on the matter unless he talks to the player or his agent.
