New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin: We certainly could have been a lot more competitive – NFL News
The New York Giants have been eliminated from the playoff contention without even getting a chance to defend their title in the postseason. They, however, did manage to finish the season on a positive note by beating the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 17 game,
but a couple of more victories were needed for them to qualify for the postseason.
The Giants had a relatively better start to the season, and they maintained lead in National Football Conference (NFC) East for a considerable period. However, the second half of the season did not entirely please them. They lost their games, while their
divisional opponents, Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles, continued to win their games.
This brought the Giants in a do-or-die situation during the last few weeks, but they did have some control over their destiny. They lost two crucial games (in Week 15 and 16) and things eventually came to the regular season finale which the Giants had to
win, hoping the results of other games in the conference would suit them.
This did not happen and soon after Giants defeated the Eagles, the Chicago Bears defeated the Detroit Lions, eliminating the Giants.
Giants head coach Tom Coughlin has expressed disappointment on not reaching the postseason despite having strong chances of doing so for most part of the season. He, however, believes that the outcome of Bears-Lions game should not be considered because
a team must rely on its own performances.
According to the details present on the team’s website, the Giants head coach said after Week 17 game:
“The first thing is you never rely on anyone else in this business. You have to take care of your own business. And we certainly had our chances.”
Coughlin added:
“Quite frankly, I’m anxious to find out if anybody has an opinion or an answer because our program, literally, is the same except for the emphasis throughout the course of our introduction to the next opponent. That’s not to say that the two teams that we
played weren’t outstanding football teams—they are. But we certainly could have been a lot more competitive.”
