New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin accepts responsibility of team’s failure – NFL News
New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin has accepted the responsibility for the team’s failure during the past few weeks that has jeopardised their playoff chances.
Talking to reporters after Week 16 defeat against the Baltimore Ravens, the Giants head coach maintained that the players had been unable to control their mistakes, especially after their bye week.
The Giants are 2-3 after their bye and they have now lost lead in National Football Conference (NFC) East. In order to qualify for the playoffs now, the defending Super Bowl champions will have to win their Week 17 game against divisional opponents Philadelphia
Eagles, and hope the Washington Redskins, who are currently leading the division, lose their game.
A victory against the Ravens would not have guaranteed their playoff berth, but it would have kept them pretty much alive in the competition, which does not seem to be the case now.
Against the Ravens, the Giants offence failed to perform well. The troubles on offence are not just limited to their inability to reach the end zone. In fact, the Giants have been facing difficulties in maintaining even the ball possession.
The same happened in their Week 15 whitewash against the Atlanta Falcons and now there was no considerable improvement in their game in Week 16.
According to the details present on the team’s website, Coughlin expressed disappointment over the defeat against Ravens, and took full responsibility of the team’s recent failures that might end their season after the regular season.
Coughlin said:
“As I told the players, it’s a very difficult time for all of us. I take full responsibility for this team. I am the head coach. What has happened over the course of the last couple of weeks is very difficult to explain.”
He added:
“We had a resounding win against New Orleans and felt real good about ourselves, and then I have no explanation as to why we’re in the position that we’re in. We’re playing a lot of people, we’re putting a lot of people in positions where they need to make
plays and frankly, right now, we’re not making any.”
