New York Giants’ head coach Tom Coughlin appreciates Hakeem Nicks’ optimism – NFL News
New York Giants’ head coach, Tom Coughlin, has appreciated the positive attitude of wide receiver, Hakeem Nicks, who recently suffered a foot injury that is expected to keep him away from the sport for around three months.
Although Nicks has recently undergone surgery to treat the injury and his doctors also think that he might not be able to take the field for a few months, the receiver is optimistic about returning to the field as soon as possible.
He is going to miss the ongoing organised team activities (OTAs) and will not be able to attend the veteran’s minicamp in June. He is also expected to miss the training camp that will kick off in July.
Nicks, meanwhile, believes that he will be able to join the team for the training camp after which Giants will play their preseason games.
Coughlin recently spoke to Nicks on phone and the player’s determination to recover early really impressed him. He said of the player:
"I really appreciated his optimism. He has a cast and is elevated. He told me he was pretty much pain-free."
It is not the first time that Nicks has shown willingness to return early. In fact, he was upbeat about early recovery as soon as he sustained the injury.
While admitting that such injuries can take more time in recovery, Coughlin had hoped for Nicks’ early return and said:
"He [Nicks] feels very confident about it. The doctors have expressed it as being something that they think will heal very, very well."
He added:
"You’re going to be sitting right up next to that opening game, and we certainly hope that Hakeem is correct in saying that he heals fast."
Nicks was one of the main receivers of Giants’ quarterback, Eli Manning, during the last season. The trio of Nicks, Mario Manningham and Victor Cruz was considered as one of the best in the league as it led the team to winning the Super Bowl.
This offseason, Manningham left the team to join the San Francisco 49ers and Nicks’ injury is also not a good omen for the Giants, who are hoping to win second Super Bowl title in a row.
