New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin appreciates Osi Umenyiora’s return – NFL News
New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin has appreciated defensive end Osi Umenyiora’s return to the game, saying that it is a ‘very good thing’.
Osi did not attend any of the team’s activities since winning the Super Bowl last season.
He needed a new contract and the issue lingered on for a while before the team management agreed to restructure final year of his contract by reportedly increasing his salary.
Osi has been playing for the Giants since starting his professional National Football League (NFL) career in 2003. He has won two Super Bowls with the team, got two Pro Bowl selections and is a two-time All Pro.
Osi attended Giants organised team activity (OTA) for the first time this offseason on Monday after getting done with the contract issue.
Giants just cannot ignore the player who has played eight seasons for them and Coughlin thinks that Osi’s presence is going to help the team achieve its goal for the upcoming season in which Giants will be defending the Super Bowl title.
According to the details present on the team’s official website, Coughlin is of the view that now he will have all his players during the team meetings and training camps, which will certainly develop good team chemistry.
When asked about the importance of Osi’s return to the field, the head coach said:
“No question. With three OTA’s and a mini-camp to go, that is the most important thing.”
He added:
“There is never any question about Osi preparation-wise. He is a tremendous studier of the opponent. He knows exactly what his thoughts are going into the game and how the game plan fits. He will always do that, but to get back into a football frame of
mind – and a positive one at that – it is a very good thing.”
Meanwhile, Osi has also said that he is happy just to be back with his teammates.
Now that Giants have all their players on the field, it will become easier for the coaches to prepare the squad for the upcoming season in which the team is expected to face harder challenges not just from the opponents in the National Football Conference
(NFC) East division but from the entire league.
