New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin backs quarterback Eli Manning – NFL News
New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning was unable to stage another late comeback for his team as the defending champions lost their Week 9 game at their home against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
However, head coach Tom Coughlin has backed the quarterback, saying that they have to get him back on the track.
Against Steelers, Manning struggled to find his receivers on most of the passes. He threw a total of 24 passes, but could complete only 10 of them. Manning gained only 125 yards in the game and also sent an interception without getting a touchdown. He was
also sacked a couple of times for the loss of 11 yards in total.
Coughlin is of the view that Manning alone must not be blamed for the loss. The head coach asserted that the entire team struggled on the field and eventually the quarterback’s performance was affected.
According to the details present on Giants’ website, Coughlin said of Manning:
“I’m sure he would come and tell you he didn’t play as well as he would have liked to play and that’s what we all feel. We’ve got to get him back on track. He is our guy and we have to get him back playing the way he was a couple of weeks ago. And we have
to do it in a hurry. It’s just not Eli now. We’re struggling to get ourselves in position so it’s an automatic for the quarterback.”
Giants got a couple of touchdowns against Steelers; the first one came as a result of Andre Brown’s run into the end zone, while the second one came when Michael Boley returned a fumble for a touchdown.
In the National Football League’s (NFL) overall ratings, Manning is ranked 11th among the offence leaders. The Giants’ quarterback has had a decent season so far as he has relatively well pass completion rate and quarterback rating. However, he
must be extra careful in the second half of the season as his team’s playoff hopes are on the line. Manning’s brother Peyton Manning, the Denver Broncos quarterback, is leading the rankings at present.
