New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin takes blame of loss against Philadelphia Eagles – NFL News
New York Giants are at the bottom of National Football Conference (NFC) East after Week 4. They could have been leading the division had they made some sensible decisions towards the end of the final quarter against Philadelphia Eagles last Sunday.
With around 15 seconds left on the clock, Giants were trailing by two points. They had the possession and more than 50 yards to cover to reach the end zone.
They had no timeouts left and instead of hurrying up to cover some distance so as to set up a field goal from short distance, Giants head coach Tom Coughlin called his kicker Lawrence Tynes to attempt a field goal.
The decision was somewhat confusing as Giants could have gained some more yards before setting up the field goal and hence Tynes would have a relatively easier target to achieve.
However, that did not happen and when Tynes attempted the field goal from 54 yards, he missed it, resulting in Giants’ defeat.
Fingers were pointed at Coughlin, who has readily taken the blame for the defeat. During his Monday press conference, the Giants head coach said:
“I take full responsibility for that. And as I told the players, I will start the meeting off by talking about my sins, and that's one that I will confess to."
He added:
“We had the game in our possession, we were in field-goal range and we didn't get it done. All of those things, put the blame right here, it is right where it should be. The game was in hand, we let it get out of hand. All the analysis afterward is fine
and dandy, that is what we all do for a living, me included. Analyse, analyse, analyse."
Giants will play their Week 5 game against Cleveland Browns and they can still come back to lead the division if they keep on improving their game.
Against Eagles, Giants displayed satisfactory performance, overall, but the late call seriously dented their prospects. The defending Super Bowl champions are certainly under pressure and Coughlin’s decision suggests that they need to be mentally strong
if they want to remain in the competition.
