New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin wants to be aggressive on run defence – NFL News
New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin has underlined the importance of run defence, saying that it also displays assertive mentality on part of the entire team.
Although Giants have been inconsistent on run defence this season, Coughlin is of the view that there is a separate strategy to counter every team.
According to the details present on the team’s website, Coughlin said:
“I just say (the run defence is a priority) for a multitude of reasons.”
The Giants head coach added:
“The first thing is that when you state you have to stop the run, you’re also declaring a physical mentality and that mentality is ‘I don’t care whether there are six men in the box seven, eight - stop the run.’ It’s so critical to every other thing that
you want to accomplish in terms of being able to force the pass or force the pass rush and have more opportunities to turn the ball over and that type of thing. You’re making a statement about who you are.”
As far as running defence is concerned, Giants have not maintained an exceptional record this season. They rank 23 in overall league ranking for running defence.
However, they have played a few games during which their opponents were restricted to scoring for less than 100 rushing yards in the game.
This goes to show that the team certainly has the potential to further improve the running defence.
Meanwhile, Coughlin also shed light on the situation of quarterback Eli Manning, who has been struggling to perform well during the last few games and receiving a lot of criticism.
Coughlin expressed his complete faith in the quarterback and said that he must not worry about the critics and should not let the criticism affect his performance.
The Giants head coach maintained that even the best players need support and backing from the coaches and players to boost their confidence.
The head coach also performed some one-on-one drills with Manning and his receivers during practice this week and expressed satisfaction over how the session went.
Whether Giants are able to improve their run defence will be seen during Week 10 game against Cincinnati Bengals this Sunday.
