New York Giants linebacker, Michael Boley, sympathises with San Francisco 49ers’ Kyle Williams
New York Giants' linebacker, Michael Boley, has expressed disappointment over the reaction of San Francisco 49ers’ fans, who had sent ‘death threats’ to the team’s wide receiver, Kyle Williams, for two infamous fumbles during the National Football Conference (NFC) championship game.
Boley termed the threats ‘unfortunate’, on Tuesday, January 24, 2012, and said that victory and defeat are a part of the game and that the fans should acknowledge this fact.
The Giants defeated the 49ers, 20-17, in overtime at the Candlestick Park on Sunday.
Williams made the first of his two fumbles during the third quarter, after which the Giants went on to score a touchdown.
During overtime, Williams repeated the debacle and fumbled on a punt return, loosing the ball.
The 49ers lost the possession and the Giants got control over the ball that allowed them to set up the game-winning field goal.
After the game, the dejected 49ers’ fans criticised Williams severely and called for killing him. However, there were other fans, who stepped up to support him.
All of his teammates, including coach, Jim Harbaugh, did not blame Williams for the loss, and urged the fans to get over it.
Now the Giants’ linebacker has also displayed sportsman’s spirit and hoped that Williams would not be bothered by the criticism.
"For people to do that, for us as players, this is a tough business," Boley said.
The Giants' linebacker added:
"We're all tremendous athletes and we're here for a reason, part of a select few that made it this far. And people don't realise how tough it is. It's a tough job. And as far as for him, I hope he keeps his head up, and this is just a minor setback."
After winning the NFC championship title, the Giants are going to take on the American Football Conference (AFC) champions, New England Patriots, in the Super Bowl XLVI on February 5, in Indianapolis.
Boley, who will play his first Super Bowl, said that he is excited about the matchup. He also said that he was ready to face the Pats.
Boley commented:
“We always have a list of targeted guys that can make a game. For the tight ends, it has been a long list of them lately and it is kind of one of those things that we embrace. We love the challenge.”
