New York Giants linebacker Mathias Kiwanuka seeks second opinion on neck injury
New York Giants linebacker Mathias Kiwanuka hopes to be in the lineup next week when the New York Giants take on the Houston Texans in week five. He will visit a neck specialist in order to get a second opinion on the bulging disk in his neck, which kept
him out of Sunday's game against the Chicago Bears.
Kiwanuka was forced to watch his teammates chalk up nine sacks on Jay Cutler in their 17-3 victory with an injury that was initially supposed to keep the linebacker out of the lineup indefinitely. But Kiwanuka is optimistic he will be back in the lineup
soon, even as early as next week.
"It's possible. We're going to discuss it with the doctors and take it from there," Kiwanuka said. "You wake up in the morning and your neck's a little stiff. ... It's not something that I think can keep me out for a long time."
It is unclear when Kiwanuka sustained the injury, but he reported feeling tightness in his neck shortly after the Giants lost to the Tennessee Titans 29-10 in week three.
"It was just coming out of a regular game and you're playing hard and you feel sore," he said. "I didn't feel it was anything noteworthy, but I figured if it's your neck you have to be careful with that. ... It was enough to shut me down this week and hopefully
I'll be back next week."
Initial reports from doctors regarding Kiwanuka's condition were alarming enough to have the Giants preparing for a worst case scenario, where Kiwanuka could be out for as long as three months.
The injury is eerily similar to that sustained by fellow Giants linebacker Antonio Pierce back in 2009. Pierce opted to retire from the NFL rather than undergo surgery to correct the problem.
Kiwanuka already has four sacks in only three games so far this season.
