New York Giants outclass Cleveland Browns 41-27 – NFL Recap
The defending Super Bowl champions New York Giants outclassed Cleveland Browns when they were looking to get their first win of the season on Sunday, October 07, at MetLife Stadium.
In Week 5 game of the season, Giants rallied after a mediocre first quarter to stun the Browns, 41-27.
Browns are 0-5 and placed at the bottom of American Football Conference (AFC) North. Their quarterback Brandon Weeden is in all sorts of trouble as he once again failed to give a match-winning performance.
He finished the game completing 22 of his 35 passes for 291 yards. Weeden scored two touchdowns, but also sent two interceptions.
However, the main flaw was in the defence rather than the offence. Browns started the game well and got the lead at the end of first quarter, but they gave away plenty of scoring opportunities in the next three quarters to lose the game.
Browns coach Pat Shurmur said after the game:
"We started out fast and got an early lead. We had a three-minute stretch before the end of the first half that was, 'Wow, you can't do that against a good football team.' "
For Giants, wide receiver Victor Cruz and running back Ahmad Bradshaw gave scintillating performances.
Cruz gained 50 yards on five receptions and scored three touchdowns. He is fast becoming quarterback Eli Manning’s favourite target.
Cruz said after the game:
“I was just happy to be out there and be somebody that Eli can count on. I was able to come through with some big plays today so it felt good.”
Meanwhile, Bradshaw gained 200 yards in the game on 30 carries. He said after the game:
“My hat goes off to my lineman; they did a great job. They couldn’t have done any better. There were holes everywhere. All I did was just run and it was a great day, great game and we came out successful.”
Browns got the first scoring move of the game when rookie running back Trent Richardson got a 15-yard run for a touchdown. Weeden found Josh Gordon from 62 yards to score another touchdown, taking the lead to 14 points.
Towards the end of the first quarter, Manning gave a three-yard pass to Cruz for touchdown.
Browns got a field goal in the second quarter, which was dominated by the hosts for the rest of the time.
Giants got a field goal, which was followed by Bradshaw’s four-yard run for a touchdown to level the score.
Manning found Cruz once again, this time from seven yards, to take the lead, which was extended by a field goal towards the end of the quarter.
Giants entered halftime with lead 27-17.
In third quarter, Manning sent a 28-yard touchdown pass to Cruz while Browns only got a field goal.
David Wilson rushed for 40 yards to score a touchdown to further increase Giants’ lead in the final quarter. Browns also got a touchdown in the quarter, but that was not enough to win the game.
Giants will now take on San Francisco 49ers in Week 6 game, while Browns will face Cincinnati Bengals.
