New York Giants outsmart Philadelphia Eagles as both NFC teams get eliminated – NFL Recap
Quarterback Eli Manning and the entire New York Giants took a little more time to get back in rhythm as they were eliminated from the playoff contention, even after stunning their National Football Conference (NFC) East opponents Philadelphia Eagles, 42-7,
in Week 17 game on Sunday, December 30, at MetLife Stadium.
Manning completed a total of 13 of his 21 passes for 208 yards and scored five touchdowns, while the Giants defence allowed only one touchdown from the Eagles who were led on offence by quarterback Michael Vick.
After getting an opportunity to make a comeback, Vick once again struggled to get the offence going and ended up completing 19 of 35 passes for 197 yards, and scored a touchdown and sent an interception.
The Eagles had already been eliminated from the playoff contention before this game, but the Giants had slight hope. They had to win this game, which they did, and wait for Detroit Lions to beat the Chicago Bears, which did not happen.
It was an utter humiliation for the Giants who won the last Super Bowl. They have finished this season winning nine and losing seven games. The Associated Press quoted Giants defensive end Justin Tuck as saying:
"It happens that way. I've been 10-6 and not made the playoffs. You've got to win the ones you're supposed to. That's why the division games mean so much. If we'd won the division games, we'd still be in the driver's seat."
The Giants had the same record last year to end the regular season and secure a playoff berth. However, a little more effort was required from them this time because NFC East presented a serious competition this year.
Manning said of being eliminated:
"It hurts. Each year you want to make the playoffs to give yourself an opportunity to win a championship; 9-7 last year was good enough. It wasn't good enough this year and we knew it wouldn't be."
Overall, it was a good show from the Giants, something that could help them go in the offseason with better hopes for the next season.
For the Eagles, however, the tale of misery continued, and rumours are now gaining strong ground that their head coach Andy Reid might not be with the franchise next season.
Although Reid has expressed hopes of being with the franchise next season, he knows that it will be hard to convince the owner to allow him to complete his contract that has one more year left. Whatever the case is, Reid has said that he would accept the
owner’s decision.
Eagles have finished the season with four wins and 12 defeats. This is the worst record for Reid as Eagles’ head coach.
Meanwhile, Washington Redskins defeated Dallas Cowboys to qualify for the playoffs as NFC East leaders.
