New York Giants punter Steve Weatherford tracks back on comments about Jets QB Mark Sanchez
The quarterback situation at the New York Jets is one of the most followed stories of this offseason and any statement regarding either Mark Sanchez or Tim Tebow by anyone is quickly pounced upon by the media and blown out of proportion.
New York Giants punter, Steve Weatherford found just how much his comment on Sanchez’s development on Thursday would be blown out of proportion.
On Friday the punter tracked back on his comments about Sanchez and posted on his official Twitter account.
“I think @Mark_Sanchez knows the truth. I would never "RIP" a former teammate. Marks a great competitor and close friend This is outta control.”
- Steve Weatherford (@Weatherford5) May 18, 2012.
The Giants punter spent two seasons playing alongside Sanchez before moving on to their cross-city rivals and in an interview on Thursday with
NFL.com had talked about the quarterback’s development since he arrived.
He also went on to say that Sanchez has what it takes to become a National Football League (NFL) great and will make people forget about Tim Tebow.
"Mark Sanchez will make people forget about (Tim) Tebow, but the competition will sharpen him. He has what is takes to be great."
Weatherford had criticised Sanchez’s development and said that the quarterback has not matured at his position even after three years at the franchise.
The quarterback has faced a lot of criticism most recently from the franchise’s quarterbacks coach, Matt Cavanaugh, after last season’s poor performances with the Jets missing out on the playoffs with an 8-8 record.
His position as starter for the Jets now also has a big question mark on it after the arrival of the hugely popular Tim Tebow.
The Jets have maintained throughout that Sanchez remains their starter for the upcoming season and Tebow will perform a backup role but might take as many as 20 snaps per game.
This seems more and more as a make-or-break season for Sanchez and he must up his game if he wants to maintain his position as starter.
Jets fans and players are now counting on Sanchez to regain the form this season that had cemented his name as one of the most exciting young prospects after he led the Jets to two consecutive American Football Conference (AFC) Championship games.
