New York Giants’ quarterback, Eli Manning, hits out at bounty system – NFL News
The infamous ‘pay for performance’ strategy adopted by defensive coordinator, Gregg Williams, during his tenure with New Orleans Saints, has an addition to the list of its critics as Super Bowl XLVI Most Valuable Player (MVP) and New York Giants’ quarterback,
Eli Manning, has taken a stern stance on this issue.
While strongly disagreeing to the procedure Williams introduced, Manning said that such methods hurt the core of the sports of football.
He was of the view that hitting and sacking the opponents are a part of the game, but he strongly condemned the idea of deliberately hunting and injuring players to receive bounties.
He said:
"I know the importance of a defence trying to get to the quarterback, get sacks, get hits on the quarterback. That's part of the game."
He added:
“But when you start talking about injuring a guy and carting him off and trying to end his season or career, that's not what this game is about. I think we should have more respect for the game than that. It can't be a part of football."
Last week, an investigation carried out by National Football League (NFL) http://www.senore.com/New-Orleans-Saints-caught-operating-illegal-bounty-system-for-three-seasons-NFL-News-a133748 that Williams maintained a bounty system when he was with Saints and he used to award his players for knocking the opponents out.
Williams later http://www.senore.com/Ex-New-Orleans-Saints-defensive-coordinator-Gregg-Williams-apologises-for-his-role-in-illegal-bounty-scheme-NFL-News-a133762, but the league might take more stern measures and could also put a ban on the franchise or the officials.
Different reports also suggested that the league would also carry out a thorough investigation to ascertain if Williams had used the same strategies with different teams he has served in the league.
Manning was infuriated as he might also have become a victim of such foul tactic. He also stressed on the need of keeping the sport clean from every sort of ill activity and hoped that the NFL would take serious measures to deal with the present issue.
He said:
"It's not good for football and can't be a part of football. I know (Commissioner) Roger Goodell will do a good job figuring all this out and making sure this doesn't happen again."
Manning is the only one who has spoken harshly of this issue, but the league is facing a dilemma as some of the players have also spoken
