New York Giants quarterback, Eli Manning, sidelined after ‘stomach bug’ – NFL News Update
A surprising development came for New York Giants on Wednesday, January 18, 2012, when their star quarterback, Eli Manning, was sidelined from the training session owing to what coach, Tom Coughlin, termed ‘a stomach bug’.
Manning, like his other teammates, started the training, took a few snaps, but left the field in the middle of the session.
The Giants have placed him on the injury list, but the coach believes that Manning will be back on Thursday.
The Giants’ workout on Wednesday was less intense. They will go for more extreme training on Thursday and Friday.
“Eli started practice but did not finish,” Coach Tom Coughlin said. “He has a stomach bug and that is why he appears on the injury list. Hopefully it is just a 24-hour deal and he will feel better tomorrow.”
The Giants are going to play against the San Francisco 49ers at the Candlestick Park on Sunday for the National Football Conference (NFC) championship game.
The winner will qualify for the Super Bowl.
Even the slightest of injury to any player is enough to prompt concerns for either team, and if it is Manning then the tension in the camp is justified.
"You could see he was feeling bad. I told one of these guys I couldn't imagine going through practice with the flu and he has to think about so many things before the snap, during the snap. I hope he gets better, but I can't imagine what he's going through,"
tight end Jake Ballard said of Manning.
Manning is the central playmaker for the Giants and has led the team to many victories.
In the regular season, he played all the 16 games where he completed 359 passes of 589 attempts for 4,933 yards while throwing 29 touchdowns and 16 interceptions.
In the postseason, where he also received the much needed support from his rushers, he led the Giants to victory against Atlanta Falcons (24-2) and the defending Super Bowl Champions, Green Bay Packers (37-20).
Against the Falcons, Manning completed 23 passes of 32 attempts for 227 yards and threw three touchdowns.
His performance was even better against the Packers. He completed 21 passes of 33 attempts for 330 yards while throwing three touchdowns and one interception.
Although Manning is expected to return to practice on Thursday, his half-day absence is also tormenting for the side.
