New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning appreciates defence for outclassing San Francisco 49ers
New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning has appreciated the defence for outclassing San Francisco 49ers in Week 6 game.
The Giants defence took the game away almost on its own without seemingly needing much assistance from Manning-led offence.
Giants allowed a field goal in the first quarter, but that was the only scoring move of the game for the 49ers.
All Giants offence needed to do was to slowly and smoothly build plays and provide scoring opportunities.
Manning, who generally finds himself leading the team’s comeback towards the end of most of the games, had a different game against 49ers, as his team was not behind the opponents in the second half.
Instead, the quarterback just capitalised on the momentum created by the Giants defence and led the team to an impressive victory.
Manning completed a total of 15 passes of 28 attempts for 193 yards and scored a touchdown without being sacked at all.
According to the details present on the team’s website, Manning admitted that the offence was not under pressure against 49ers. He said:
“Offensively, we didn’t have to force things. We didn’t have to try to make big plays. We could just bide our time, dink and dunk, when we had some shots, go after it. But we could be a little more conservative, run the ball and we were able to do that.”
The quarterback said of the game:
“I think we played smart football. Offensively, we had some good drives, which is what we needed to do. We had some opportunities to get more points and had to settle for field goals a few [too] many times. But the defence played outstanding and got the
turnovers.”
Meanwhile, Manning was also happy to have wide receiver Hakeem Nicks back in the side. Nicks is among Manning’s favourite receivers. The player was out after Giants’ Week 2 victory against Tampa Bay Buccaneers and missed the next three games before returning
against 49ers.
The victory over 49ers gave Giants their fourth victory of the season and an edge over other teams in National Football Conference (NFC) East. Philadelphia Eagles (3-3), Washington Redskins (3-3) and Dallas Cowboys (2-3) are behind the defending champion.
