New York Giants’ quarterback Eli Manning hoping to build a good squad through draft – NFL News
New York Giants won the Super Bowl XLVI through a team effort, which was acknowledged by nearly everyone. Had any player not performed his duty well, Giants might not have received the glory.
In retaining that title and performing equally well in the next National Football League (NFL) season, however, Giants could face difficulties as all members of the team that won the honour are not present in New York now.
Giants have recently lost wide receiver, Mario Manningham, whose performance in the Super Bowl XLVI matchup was particularly special. Manningham has joined San Francisco 49ers.
Not only this, 49ers have also acquired former Giants’ running back, Brandon Jacobs, off the free agency. Jacobs, too, was a part of the last season’s Super Bowl winning squad.
With just a day left in the beginning of the NFL 2012 draft, Super Bowl XLVI Most Valuable Player (MVP) and Giants’ quarterback, Eli Manning, has hoped to find replacements of those who have left the team.
The New York Post reported the quarterback as saying that Giants are hoping to add strength to the team’s offensive line through draft. The quarterback said:
"When we go into the draft, that could be an area we try to attack. Get a skill-position guy who can help us get carries, get catches, in some ways get that same production from the guys we lost last year."
He was of the view that addition of any player to the offensive squad always serves the team well. Manning said:
"As an offensive player I’ve always learned you can never go wrong drafting offensive lineman. That’s how a quarterback thinks."
Apart from losing Manningham and Jacobs, Giants also have to address the needs at the tight end position.
During the Super Bowl XLVI game, Giants’ tight ends, Jake Ballard and Travis Beckum, got injured and are expected to miss most part of the next season.
Giants have recently signed former Dallas Cowboys’ tight end, Martellus Bennett, but Manning thinks that there is a need to get more tight ends. He said:
“We may need that tight end where Travis played some, can play in the slot, can move around and give you some different options."
