New York Giants receive appreciation from president Barack Obama – NFL News Update
The jubilant New York Giants reached the threshold of delight when the President of the United States of America, Barack Obama, congratulated the team on Tuesday, February 7, 2012, for its Super Bowl XLVI victory.
According to the White House, the president called Giants’ head coach, Tom Coughlin, and offered his personal congratulations, while lauding the team’s overall performance.
President Obama’s favourite team is Chicago Bears. Before the Super Bowl game, he had predicted that the encounter between Giants and Patriots would be very close.
However, he did not pick any winner, since in 2008, he incorrectly forecasted a win for the Patriots against Giants.
The president was of the view that the victory was a result of team effort. He especially mentioned the contribution of coach Coughlin and said that it was his leadership ability that secured the victory for the team.
White House spokesman, Jay Carney, said:
“The president said that the team's victory was a testament to Coach Coughlin's leadership and that his team demonstrated true grit and determination.”
Later during the winning parade, Coughlin informed the crowd about the call from the president and said that Obama admired the team effort.
“He spoke about our resiliency, our leadership, the great ability that this team possessed to finish, to win so many games in the fourth quarter.”
Giants developed a reputation of the team, which registers late comebacks to steal the victory from the jaws of the defeat.
On several occasions in the National Football League (NFL) regular season and in the playoffs, Giants were outstanding in the final minutes of the game.
Halfway through the regular season, it was assumed that Giants will not even qualify for the postseason. They not only did that, but also earned the NFL title.
Coughlin told the crowd that he and the players never lost hope and always believed in their ability.
While giving credit to team’s coaching staff, the head coach said:
“The key thing was to remember this – all things are possible for those who believe. We always believed. We always knew we could get here. We had to put it together.”
The Giants are also expected to visit the White House and meet the president.
