New York Giants retain injured cornerback, Terrell Thomas – NFL News
New York Giants have decided to retain cornerback, Terrell Thomas, who spent the last National Football League (NFL) season on injured reserve.
According to different reports, the deal, which was announced on Tuesday, March 13, 2012, is worth around $28 million that the player will earn over the course of four years.
Thomas was drafted by Giants in 2008. In his rookie year, he started only two games while playing 12 and recorded 45 tackles.
In the next season, he started all the 16 games of the regular season and recorded 85 tackles.
In the NFL 2010-11 season, he started 15 games while playing 16 and recorded a total of 101 tackles.
However, he missed the entire last season, in which Giants won the Super Bowl, due to an injury he received during the preseason game against Chicago Bears.
Thomas’ rookie contract was set to expire this year and in case of not reaching a new deal, he would have become a free agent.
However, Thomas mentioned that he was in contact with Giants from the last couple of months and was hopeful for getting new contract.
While acknowledging that he contemplated different options in case of becoming a free agent, Thomas asserted that his priority was to extend stay with Giants.
He was of the view that since he has already played with the team and is well acquainted with the working conditions, it will be easier for him to get settled after returning from the injury.
He said:
“I definitely wanted to come back here – this is home for me. Coming off an injury, it’s better to come back to the same team – you know the personnel and the staff and they know you. You know the defence.”
He added:
“My first choice was here, but I did open my eyes a little bit to free agency in case the Giants didn’t re-sign me. So I’m happy to be back.”
Meanwhile, he also said that he was feeling healthy and was working out actively.
He commented:
“I’m sprinting – almost – backpedaling, cutting, jumping, lunging, doing all that stuff. So now the fun starts in the rehab process, which is opening up to everything.”
By the looks of the things, Thomas will be able to play all the games next season provided he does not re-injure himself.
