New York Giants’ running back David Wilson wants to be himself – NFL News
New York Giants’ rookies are well aware of the fact, especially when head coach, Tom Coughlin, has also said it, that they would never get a second chance to make a first impression.
The new players want to put extra effort and go the extra mile to gain confidence of the team officials, but Giants’ first-round pick, running back, David Wilson, has a different and simple recipe to win hearts of others.
Wilson wants to be himself and do what he always does during the team’s three-day minicamp that started on Friday, May 11, 2012.
Wilson is quick, athletic and a competitor, and he thinks that these traits are enough for him to earn a spot on the team’s active roster in the upcoming National Football League (NFL) season.
According to the details present on the team’s official website, Wilson attended first day of the minicamp and when asked about how he was going to impress the coaches, the rookie said:
“Just be myself, go out there and compete because I’m a competitor and I love competition and try to wow the coaches. But at the same time, you have to know the playbook and go in the right direction at the same time, too.”
The rookies are not going to be involved in any hard physical workout during the minicamp and Wilson considers it an opportunity to adapt to the system while learning the playbook so he could be ready to train with the veterans during the team’s training
camp before the preseason games.
Wilson’s selection was important for Giants as they had lost running back, Brandon Jacobs, off the free agency before the draft. Jacobs later joined the San Francisco 49ers.
Meanwhile, Giants’ offensive coordinator, Kevin Gilbride, who spent time with Wilson on the first day, was impressed with the rookie’s speed. He also said that Wilson would prove to be a great player for the Giants.
Gilbride said of Wilson:
“He looks very fast, which we knew going in. But to actually see it on the field, it was - I’m trying to think of the right word - encouraging, exciting. Both of those things seem to come to mind. He looks like if he has a hole, he’ll hit it and has a chance
to do some damage.”
