New York Giants select David Wilson in first round of 2012 draft – NFL News
The defending Super Bowl champions, New York Giants, had the last pick in the first round of 2012 National Football League (NFL) draft and they utilised it by selecting Virginia Tech's running back, David Wilson, on Thursday, April 26, 2012.
It was expected that Giants would select a running back, apparently because Brandon Jacobs, who was a part of the last season’s Super Bowl winning squad, is no more a Giant and has joined San Francisco 49ers.
Giants needed to fill in the void, and the management thinks that Wilson will fill in Jacobs’ shoes.
While appreciating Wilson’s talent, Giants’ general manager, Jerry Reese, said:
“(He is a) terrific football player. This guy loves to play football. We like all of that stuff about him. He’s fast. He’s productive. He can do anything you want him to do. He can catch the ball. He can return kicks.”
However, the GM also said that this acquisition will not affect running back, Ahmad Bradshaw’s place in the team and that he would continue to play a major role in the team’s offensive unit.
Reese also said that his job was to add to the pool of running backs and now it will up to the team’s coaches to utilise the player in the way they want.
Meanwhile, Giants’ head coach, Tom Coughlin, also thinks that Wilson’s selection will balance the squad especially after Jacobs’ departure.
The head coach also thinks that Wilson can pose serious threat to his opponents. Coughlin said:
“We’re looking at the fact that Brandon [Jacobs] is no longer here and we do have to try to balance that out. We believe that you do have to have multiple runners or at least two that can effectively take the field at any time and this young man we thought
was one of those that can be a big play threat.”
On the other hand, Wilson has expressed hopes of giving his best to the team. While acknowledging that Giants were ranked last in rushing during the last season, Wilson said that he would try to improve that record.
Giants’ players have also welcomed Wilson to the franchise and all of them posted best wishes for the player on their respective Twitter accounts.
