New York Giants select wide receiver Rueben Randle in second round of 2012 draft – NFL News
New York Giants have selected Louisiana State University’s (LSU) wide receiver, Rueben Randle in the second round of the National Football League (NFL) 2012 draft.
The player was drafted as 63rd overall pick on Friday, April 27.
Randle, who had earlier talked to Giants’ officials, was expected to get selected in the first round of the draft, but the Giants utilised their 32nd overall pick to select Virginia Tech's running back, David Wilson.
On the second day of the draft, Giants were fortunate that no other team selected Randle and when their turn came, they did not hesitate in selecting the receiver.
With the selection, Giants have made an attempt to strengthen their offensive squad, which saw some of the key players deserting the team recently.
Running back, Brandon Jacobs, and wide receiver, Mario Manningham, who were the members of last season’s Super Bowl winning squad, have left Giants and they needed players to fill in their shoes.
Wilson’s acquisition was also aimed at filling the void created by Jacobs’ departure and the addition of Randle to assist Giants’ quarterback, Eli Manning, is also a part of that campaign.
While talking to media, Giants’ head coach, Tom Coughlin, appreciated Randle’s skills and abilities, and said:
“He doesn’t have that Olympic type speed, but he has the size and the speed and the power. He’s a smooth athlete. Very, very athletic guy. We rated him very highly and when it came time for us to make our pick he was without a doubt the guy that had the
highest grade.”
Many commentators including some of Giants officials think that Randle is an NFL-ready receiver.
The player indeed was considered as one of the best available receivers in the draft, but Randle thinks that he still has to learn a lot of things to give his best shot.
He said:
“I’m sure there are a lot of things that I have to work on. I’m not sure I’m going to be quite as ready yet. I have to get adjusted to the timing and the speed of the game, so I’m just going to come in there and work hard and hopefully I’ll get my opportunity.”
