New York Giants sign Zak DeOssie and Adam Koets to extensions
Offensive lineman Adam Koets and long snapper Zak DeOssie both signed two-year contract extensions with the New York Giants, confirmed NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora.
Koets reportedly signed the deal on Saturday, 6 November, and then tore a ligament in his knee in the team’s 41-7 win against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, placing him on injured reserve on Tuesday. He was already filling in for injured centre Shaun O’Hara,
who is not expected to return to the lineup until 21 November in Philadelphia.
Koets and O’Hara are not the only offensive linemen ailing for the Giants. David Diehl has an injured hip as well, but Kevin Boothe has been taken off the physically-unable-to-perform list. Boothe could see action this Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys.
Koets’ deal will provide him with a base salary of $705,000 in 2011, and $840,000 in 2012. It also includes a $360,000 signing bonus.
Over his career, Koets has appeared in 11 games, eight of them this season. The 26-year-old’s four starts this season are his only career NFL starts. He started both the games that the Giants lost this season, a 38-14 loss to Indianapolis, and a 29-10 loss
to Tennessee. The team is 2-2 with Koets starting.
DeOssie’s new contract is worth $3.3 million and includes a signing bonus of $542,000. He is now the fourth highest paid long snapper in the NFL. He’s played in every game so far this season.
Over the summer, DeOssie commented that he would prefer to be a linebacker like his father was, but long snapping in the NFL pays the bills. It’s a specialist position in the NFL, one that is extremely important in a number of situations.
This season is DeOssie’s fourth in the NFL. He appeared in every game for the Giants in his first three seasons, and has appeared in all eight games the team has played this year.
