New York Giants’ wide receiver, Victor Cruz, demands pay raise – NFL News Update
New York Giants’ wide receiver, Victor Cruz, wants to extract all the possible gains from the successful season in which he played a vital role in leading his team to the Super Bowl XLVI victory.
The overwhelming fandom is good to get him going, but there is something else that he needs – a salary raise.
The 25-year-old Cruz, who has recently completed his second professional National Football League (NFL) season, demanded of the team management on Thursday, February 9, 2012, to add more monetary benefits to his contract.
Cruz has now entered the final year of his contract, which will give him $490,000 next year. However, Cruz wants to stay with Giants and get a contract extension with increased salary.
He commented:
"I hope as soon as possible. I want to remain a Giant for a very long time. Hopefully we can do something this offseason to extend that."
Cruz also stated:
“Honestly, with what I did this year, statistically and the records and everything like that, obviously I feel like just looking at the top players in the league and looking at what I did this year, I feel like naturally there should be an increase in pay.”
Keeping Cruz’s stats in mind, it would be hard for Giants to ignore his demands.
During the regular season, Cruz had 82 receptions for the franchise-best 1,536 yards and nine touchdowns.
In the postseason, he rushed for 269 yards on 21 catches for one touchdown.
It is still too early to tell whether Cruz will get a contract extension on his terms or not, but there is no denying the fact that Giants would love to have him on the roster.
While discussing franchise’s offseason plans with media, Giants’ general manager, Jerry Reese, said that he expected many players to come up with the same demands.
However, he also said that no decision has been made on the contract of any player yet and the process is still in the phase of evaluation.
He said:
“You win the Super Bowl and if everybody thinks they’re the reason we won – that’s a good problem to have.”
Cruz has clearly stated that he wants things to get settled as soon as possible.
The Giants should better be careful and deal with him lest the player undergoes the same fate as Philadelphia Eagles’ DeSean Jackson, who despite being outstanding earlier could not perform well in the last season, admitting that the expiring contract distracted him.
