New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz hoping to get new contract before season ends – NFL News
New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz, who will become a restricted free agent after the end of this season, has hoped to get a new contract before the season ends.
However, the player is not letting the contract become a distraction for him. Cruz said on WFAN, via ESPN:
"I'm just in a position right now where I'm just focused on football. I have people, my agents and things like that, to worry about that stuff. But as a human being, you obviously want to ... you hope you get it done before the season's over, obviously."
Cruz, who was undrafted in 2010, has been an exceptional support to the Giants’ offensive line.
After playing just three games in his rookie season, Cruz was trusted with more responsibilities last season in which the Giants won the Super Bowl.
In the 2011 regular season, Cruz stared seven games while playing 16 and had a breakout season. He gained a total of 1,536 yards on 82 receptions and scored nine touchdowns.
He has already displayed even better performance this season. The receiver has played and started all seven games this season. He has gained a total of 627 yards on 50 receptions while scoring seven touchdowns, helping his side securing lead in National
Football Conference (NFC) East.
Cruz has said that he does not want his contract situation to develop into any sort of controversy that could distract him from his game. Giants are on a tough mission to defend the title and any off-field distraction for them might hurt their cause.
Hoping to retire as a Giant, Cruz said:
"My team and my agents, my team on my side, we would like to get it done before the season (ends). We don't want to drag it along, and become something that blocks the team in the offseason, and something that is in the media every day.”
By the looks of the things, Giants might not drag this issue either. Cruz has been playing well for them and they will not regret giving him a new contract that could keep him with the team for a longer period.
